Welcome to our histological atlas

The Department of Histology and Embryology of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka enables its students to study the histological structure of individual tissues and organs with the use of binocular microscopes and collections of histological preparations of human tissues and organs. As a learning aid, this Atlas of histological preparations, designed and prepared by teachers of the Department, is available to everyone as an online tool. This atlas enables virtual microscopy, with scanned histological preparations that provide an overview of the entire sample and the possibility of enlarging the image up to 400x.

The histological atlas is intended primarily for students following the Histology and Embryology and Histology courses in the study of Medicine, Dental Medicine and professional studies, but also for those who, as an introduction to Pathology, want to be reminded of the appearance of normal histological structures of individual tissues and organs.

The collection of scanned preparations, along with basic data essential for each preparation, is divided into the following areas: General histology, Special histology and Embryology. Most of the slides are from tissues and organ samples of human origin obtained from the Department of Pathology and Pathological Anatomy and the Department of Forensic Medicine and Criminalistics of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka, the Department of Surgery and the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka. If the samples are of animal origin, this is specifically indicated in the descriptions. Typically, tissues of animal organ are used when they provide a slide of higher education value, for example to show the entire organ.
